AIDA ALMIRA ACOSTA de WEISS
Aida Acosta was born in Victoria de las Tunas, Provincia de Oriente, Cuba, on September 1, 1935, and died at the home of her son in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on November 10, 2016. She was the daughter of Eduardo Acosta and Margarita Velez de Acosta.
Aida was granted a BA degree in Chemistry by Southern Missionary College in Collegedale, Tennessee, in 1958, and a Masters in Metabolic Nutrition by Columbia University in 1962. That same year she married Herold Weiss and continued studies toward a doctoral degree at Columbia University. In 1968 she became an Instructor at the Chemistry Department of Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan.
After the birth of her two sons, she dedicated herself to the raising of her boys, and when her parents retired and came to live near her in Berrien Springs, she became their caregiver. Pursuing her artistic inclinations and talents, she took classes on china painting and became an admired china decorator, much to the delight of her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband of 54 wonderful years, Herold; her sons, Dito and Carlos (Melanie); her brother, Edwin Orval Acosta (Bruce Tichenor); and five grandchildren: Jacqueline, Andres, Elena, Daniel and Maria.
Visitation took place at the Allred Funeral Home in Berrien Springs on Sunday, November 13, from 6 – 8 p.m. The funeral was celebrated at the Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Church in Berrien Springs at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 15, with burial following at Rose Hill Cemetery.
