With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Carl Leo Bixby, a husband, father, brother, and friend. Carl peacefully departed this life on December 11, 2023, at Provision Living in Saint Joseph, MI, surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born on October 6, 1939, in Niles, MI, to the late Carl and Gennevieve Bixby. Carl graduated from Berrien Springs High School Class of 1958 as valedictorian. Following high school, Carl attended West Point Military Academy. He earned degrees in engineering and computer science from the University of Michigan. He went on to start his own business as president at Interface Systems, Inc. Carl and his wife Karen were married October 22, 2004 in Saint Joseph, Michigan.
Carl proudly cheered on his alma mater’s football and basketball teams throughout his life. He held a special connection to Lake Michigan. Carl loved fishing there as well as fly fishing many inland lakes and streams. Classical music, bird watching and camping with his children were also among his favorite things. One of his favorite activities was visiting Bixby Farms as well as talking about the farm.
Carl leaves behind his beloved wife, Karen Bixby, who stood by his side through thick and thin, sharing a love that knew no bounds. Carl also leaves behind his children, Lazarus Satori, Patti Evans, and step children, Laura (Ross) Wagner, Leah (Alan) Alsbro, and Tod (Gidget) Kretchman. Also surviving are his two sisters- in-law, Pat (Paul) Bixby and Pat (Dan) Bixby.
Carl was preceded in death by his mother, Gennevieve Bixby, his father, Carl Bixby, his brothers, Paul Bixby and Dan Bixby, and his sister, Janet (George) Shafer. Also preceding him are two sons, Eric Bixby and Quenten Bixby.
To honor and celebrate Carl’s life, a Mass will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on December 18, 2023, at 11:00 am. An inurnment is planned at Rose Hill Cemetery following the celebration of life. This ceremony will provide an opportunity for family, friends, and community members to come together to pay their respects and remember Carl.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation or St. Paul’s Memorial Fund in Carl’s honor.
May Carl rest in eternal peace, fishing in the streams of heaven and admiring the beautiful birds in the golden skies above.
