Carmen Bonilla De Carretero

Carmen Bonilla de Carretero, a cherished soul was called by our Lord to her eternal home on January 23rd, 2024. She was born on July 16, 1946 in the beautiful city of Puebla, Mexico. She blossomed like the exquisite flor de mayo, bringing joy and warmth to all who knew her.

Carmen, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, has left behind a legacy that is as rich as the loamy soil of her beloved Puebla. Her life was a tapestry woven with the threads of love and selflessness, a pattern that spoke of her dedication to her family. She was joined in holy matrimony to Juventino Carretero on July 23, 1963, and together they planted the seeds of a family that would grow even more.

The matriarch of a vibrant family, Carmen was preceded in her journey to Glory by her dear husband Juventino, her beloved son Francisco (Lourdes), and two daughters who were called to Heaven before their time. Her love and legacy are carried on by her nine daughters: Olivia Espinal (Francisco), Eloina Carretero, Margarita Martinez (David), Isabel Carretero, Katalina Carretero (Raymond), Maria Carretero (Santiago), Helen Carretero (Eddie), and two who rest in the Lord's embrace. Her life blossomed forth in her grandchildren—Eddie Villareal, Francisco Carretero Jr., Erica Santiago (Marco), Lizette Carretero, Kathryn Cortez (Amador), Juanita Carretero (Rodrigo), Hillary Fowler (Michael), Victoria Williams, and Alexis Martinez—and her great-grandchildren, eight little ones who will grow up in the light of her memory.

Carmen was the sister of Fulgencio, Froilan, and Pedro Bonilla, and her sister Enedina, all of whom besides Pedro have gone before her to prepare the way in our Father's house. Her brother Pedro remains among us to carry the flame of their shared past.

In the garden of her life, Carmen tended not only to her family but to her faith as well. She was a devout servant of the Lord, a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hartford, where she nourished her spirit and strengthened her bond with the Creator through worship and fellowship.

A keeper of her home, she toiled with joy, ensuring that her family felt the comfort of a well-tended hearth. Her hands, though they knew the rigors of work, were always quick to soothe, to comfort, and to give. Her heart knew no bounds when it came to generosity, and her spirit was a wellspring of selfless love that refreshed all who came into her presence.

Carmen's interests were the simple pleasures of life. She found joy in the aromas and flavors of her kitchen, where she crafted meals that were a testament to her love. The dramatic twists of Spanish soap operas delighted her, and she found solace in the sacred pages of her Bible each night. Shopping brought her a thrill, whether it was for the sustenance of groceries or the delight of a new garment. And oh, how she loved chocolate cake—a sweet indulgence that mirrored the sweetness of her soul.

In her, we saw the embodiment of love, generosity, and selflessness—qualities that she exemplified with every breath. Her life was a sermon of actions that spoke louder than words, a living testimony to the grace and goodness of our Lord.

Today, as we bid farewell to Carmen Bonilla de Carretero, let us not be heavy of heart. Instead, let us rejoice, for she has run the race, she has kept the faith, and now she rests in the arms of our Savior. Her memory will be a lantern to guide us, and her spirit a whisper of wind urging us on toward acts of kindness and compassion.

Services have been entrusted to Allred Funeral Home in Berrien Springs.

A visitation will take place at Allred Funeral Home on Friday January 26 at 10:30AM and will last 2 hours. Following the visitation a Mass will be held at 1:00PM at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Berrien Springs. Burial will follow the mass at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Sodus, MI.

Carmen Bonilla de Carretero, un alma preciada llamada por nuestro Señor a su hogar eterno el 23 de enero de 2024. Nació el 16 de julio de 1946 en la hermosa ciudad de Puebla, México. Floreció como el exquisito flor de mayo, trayendo alegría y calidez a todos los que la conocían.

Carmen, una devota esposa, madre y abuela, ha dejado atrás un legado tan rico como el suelo arcilloso de su amada Puebla. Su vida fue un tapiz tejido con los hilos del amor y el desinterés, un patrón que hablaba de su dedicación a su familia. Se unió en santo matrimonio a Juventino Carretero el 23 de julio de 1963, y juntos plantaron las semillas de una familia que crecería aún más.

La matriarca de una familia vibrante, Carmen fue precedida en su viaje a la Gloria por su querido esposo Juventino, su amado hijo Francisco (Lourdes), y dos hijas que fueron llamadas al Cielo antes de su tiempo. Su amor y legado son llevados por sus nueve hijas: Olivia Espinal (Francisco), Elina Carretero, Margarita Martínez (David), Isabel Carretero, Katalina Carretero (Raymond), Maria Carretero (Santiago), Helen Carretero (Eddie), y dos que descansan en el abrazo del Señor. Su vida floreció en sus nietos (Eddie Villareal, Francisco Carretero Jr., Erica Santiago (Marco), Lizette Carretero, Kathryn Cortez (Amador), Juanita Carretero, Hillary Fowler (Michael), Victoria Williams y Alexis Martínez) y sus bisnietos, ocho pequeños que crecerán a la luz de su memoria.

Carmen era la hermana de Fulgencio, Froilan y Pedro Bonilla, y su hermana Enedina, todas las cuales, además de Pedro, han ido delante de ella para preparar el camino en la casa de nuestro Padre. Su hermano Pedro permanece entre nosotros para llevar la llama de su pasado compartido.

En el jardín de su vida, Carmen atendía no solo a su familia, sino también a su fe. Ella era una sierva devota del Señor, miembro de la Iglesia Católica de la Inmaculada Concepción en Hartford, donde nutrió su espíritu y fortaleció su vínculo con el Creador a través de la adoración y el compañerismo.

Una guardia de su casa, trabajó con alegría, asegurándose de que su familia sintiera la comodidad de un hogar bien atendido. Sus manos, aunque conocían los rigores del trabajo, siempre fueron rápidas para calmar, consolar y dar. Su corazón no conocía límites cuando se trataba de generosidad, y su espíritu era una fuente de amor desinteresado que refrescó a todos los que venían a su presencia.

Los intereses de Carmen eran los simples placeres de la vida. Encontró alegría en los aromas y sabores de su cocina, donde elaboraba comidas que eran un testimonio de su amor. Los giros dramáticos de las telenovelas españolas la deleitaban, y encontró consuelo en las páginas sagradas de su Biblia cada noche. Las compras le trajeron una emoción, ya sea por el sustento de los comestibles o por el deleite de una prenda nueva. Y oh, cómo le encantaba el pastel de chocolate, una dulce indulgencia que reflejaba la dulzura de su alma.

En ella, vimos la encarnación del amor, la generosidad y el desinterés, cualidades que ella ejemplificó con cada respiración. Su vida fue un sermón de acciones que hablaban más fuerte que las palabras, un testimonio vivo de la gracia y la bondad de nuestro Señor.

Hoy, mientras nos despedimos de Carmen Bonilla de Carretero, no seamos pesados de corazón. En cambio, regocijémonos, porque ella ha corrido la carrera, ha mantenido la fe, y ahora descansa en los brazos de nuestro Salvador.

Su memoria será una linterna para guiarnos, y su espíritu un susurro de viento que nos impulsará hacia actos de bondad y compasión.

Los servicios se han confiado a Allred Funeral Home en Berrien Springs.

Una visita se llevará a cabo en la funeraria Allred el viernes 26 de enero a las 10:30 a.m. y durará 2 horas. Después de la visita, se llevará a cabo una misa a la 1:00 en St. Iglesia Católica Gabriel en Berrien Springs. El entierro seguirá la misa en el cementerio de Mount Pleasant en Sodus, MI.
