Florence H Crumley, 96, passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2020, at Royalton Manor, St. Joseph.
Florence was born on September 30, 1924, to Conrad and Mary Dick in Portland, Oregon. During WWII she worked in the Portland Shipyards as a welder, a “Rosie Riveter.” She graduated from Portland Sanitarium and Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1947, and worked as a registered nurse until her retirement. She and her husband, Gregory, who preceded her in death, owned and operated a nursing home in Salem, Oregon, for many years.
She moved to Berrien Springs in 2005 to live with her daughter, but she made numerous visits back to Oregon, and went on road trips with her dear friend Barbara. When she was nearly 85, she flew to Alaska, traveled with Barbara by car through the state and down the Alcan Highway, ending their trip at the Oregon coast where they lived for three years right on the beach. Returning to Berrien Springs, she especially enjoyed having three of her great-grandchildren nearby where she could often play with them.
Throughout her life she enjoyed walking, keeping in touch with a group of nursing school friends, and knitting and other crafts. She was humorous and appreciated a good pun or riddle. She was known as a good cook, and people remember often leaving her house with some kind of food. She made people feel welcomed and loved. She was a lifetime member of the Seventh-day Adventist church, and was a leader in the children’s divisions.
Florence is survived by two daughters, Dorothy (Carey) Carscallen of Berrien Springs, MI, and Linda (Gary) Dassenko of Charlotte, NC, and one step-son, Jack (Ingrid) Crumley of Lacey, WA; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
A private inurnment will take place in Oregon. Memorial contributions may be made to Guatemalawells.com (Water For Life). Messages and memories may be shared online at www.allredfuneralhome.com.
