Gary Rusk passed away on July 1, 2021 at the age of 87.
He grew up on a farm in Missouri with five siblings. With his brothers at war, he was given the responsibility of managing the family farm at the age of 12. He learned the value of hard work and commitment to family which carried with him his entire life.
Through the years, Gary worked as a general contractor and a business owner in Berrien Springs. He co-owned Rusk and Harden, Shawnee Lumber and was a developer of rental properties and housing in the area. He was also a commercial salmon fisherman in Alaska for over 15 years and was an accomplished pilot.
After many years of running his business, he felt a calling to serve The Lord and became director of Mission Church Builders for almost 30 years, building 67 churches and schools for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He was a talented singer and enjoyed singing in the church. He recorded three gospel albums and performed on 3ABN.
Gary and his wife, Joan, traveled extensively, serving and giving their life to the church. After he decided to retire, he moved back to Michigan to enjoy his remaining years with family and friends.
Gary met the love of his life, Joan, in high school and on June 25, 2021 they celebrated 71 years of marriage. They were inseparable and devoted to each other. Gary was a cherished husband and loving father. He is survived by his wife, five children, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He will be greatly missed.
