Gunar was born July 4, 1941, in Latvia, to John and Freda (Linde) Kampe. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 37 years, and he was a member of the Stevensville American Legion Post 568. He worked as a UPS truck driver with an accident-free record for 30 years. Gunar enjoyed woodworking and operating his saw mill, and for several years he had his own greenhouse business and also raised peacocks and racing pigeons. He had a big heart as he volunteered in the poultry barn at the Berrien County Youth Fair for 12 years, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand at the soup kitchen.
He married Marlene Geike on March 27, 1965 in St. Joseph. She survives, along with two daughters, Melissa Payne and Michelle (Chris) Siewert; four grandsons: Jonathan and Jacob Payne, Adam and Branden Siewert; half-sister, Ilena Holder; and step-sister, Marie Schinske.
Preceding him were a daughter, Melinda; his parents; brother, Ervin Kampe; and sisters, Evangeline Metz and Arlene Priest.
