Dr. Janet Louise Frey

January 2, 1942 — May 30, 2024

Berrien Springs

Dr. Janet Louise (Foy) Frey, M.D., a beacon of faith and creativity, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2024, in Berrien Springs, MI, at the age of 82. Born on January 2, 1942, in Columbus, Ohio, to the late James Jr. and E. Louise Foy, Janet's life was a tapestry woven with love, learning, and service.

Janet was the beloved wife of the late John Frey, with whom she shared a passion for family and adventure. Together, they raised a family of love and laughter, including their seven children: Joy (Adam) McDaniel, Jeanette Isaiah, Judith Frey, Joann (Jose) Carrillo, James Frey (Lisa), John P. (Chandra) Frey, and Jill (Joel) Hewitt. Janet's role as a grandmother to her five grandchildren was one of her most cherished, as she imparted information and enthusiasm in equal measure.

Her academic journey at Indiana University culminated in a Bachelor’s and a Doctoral degree, paving the way for her distinguished career as a Radiologist. Dr. Frey's dedication to her profession was matched only by her commitment to ministry through medical missions, where she touched countless lives with her skill and knowledge.

An avid reader and life-long learner, Janet's curiosity was insatiable. Her adventurous spirit found joy in explorations both near and far, fostering a sense of wonder that she eagerly shared with others. She was diversely interested in creativity and handicrafts, both historical and contemporary, about which she connected with people by asking numerous intense questions.  She also engaged in the creative process through a variety of mediums such as crochet, ceramics, and scrapbooking, and enjoyed the social nature of crafting events.

Janet's love for the natural world was evident in her pastime as a bird watcher, a hobby that provided her with hours of contemplation and connection with nature. Naturally young at heart, her involvement in children's programs showcased her dedication to nurturing young minds, instilling value and potential.

She was a pillar of her large family, thoroughly relishing the noise, chaos, and warmth that comes with a home filled with love. The words adventurous, faith-filled, and creative only begin to describe Janet's essence. Her life was a reflection of the well-known quote by Helen Keller, "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all." Janet embraced every day as a new chapter in her extraordinary adventure.

Family connections have always been important to Janet, starting with her late older brother, James Paul Foy III, and extending to her three younger sisters,  Donna Jean VanJelgerhuis,  Joyce Feichtner, and the late Judy Elliott.  Janet leaves behind a legacy of love and inspiration, not only through her immediate family but also through her surviving sisters who stood by her side in life's journey. Her influence will continue to guide her family and all who knew her.

A time of visitation will take place Friday, June 7, 2024 at Allred Funeral Home, from 5-8 p.m at 212 South Main Street, Berrien Springs, MI 49103.  The following day a service to celebrate Janet’s life will take place Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 10 a.m. at Mapleview Free Methodist Church, 1831 Niles-Buchanan Road, Niles, MI  49120.
