Larry J. Chamberlain of Berrien Springs passed away on December 15, 2021. He was 77 years old.
Larry was born February 22, 1944 in Flint, Michigan, and grew up in Holly. He attended Adelphian Seventh-day Adventist Academy, Michigan State University, and earned a Master’s degree in Education from Andrews University. While putting himself through undergrad, he worked for General Motors assembling coaches in a facility in Flint.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965, and reported for duty as a Conscientious Objector. He trained for and was assigned to the 7th Army's Medical Corps, where he served his term of enlistment honorably.
Larry returned home to continue his education and became an elementary school teacher and principal.
He married Barbara Bassham in 1971 and had two children. His family moved from Michigan to California, where they would spend the next 30 years as educators for the Seventh-day Adventist School system. Larry and Barbara retired to Berrien Springs in 2017. Barbara passed away in 2018.
Larry spent his life caring for his family in many different capacities. He was a devoted father, husband, and Christian. In 2020 he met, fell in love, and married Thelma DeGuzman, with whom he spent his remaining time.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma; son, Jonathan; daughter, Melinda; son-in-law, Jacob; daughter-in-law, Brittany; daughter-in-law Melody; stepsons: Steven, Daniel, and Butch; six grandchildren: Nathan, Cash, Violet, Charm, Isabella, and one on the way; and his sister, Sally Chamberlain.
He leaves a legacy of integrity, compassion, patience, and service to others. He will be missed and forever in our hearts.
Services will be held Tuesday, December 28, at Allred Funeral Home, where friends may visit from 11 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Messages and memories may be shared online at www.allredfuneralhome.com.
