Leona Santa Pitcher

December 23, 1934 — September 3, 2024

Leona Santa (Martino) Pitcher, a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on the 3rd of September, 2024, in her Berrien Springs, Michigan home, at the age of 89. Born on December 23, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, Leona moved to Southwest Michigan as a young girl, where she raised her family, made many friends, and impacted countless others throughout her career and volunteer work. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by many.

Leona was a touchstone of love and support for her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Martino and her beloved mother Georgia (Roma) Martino, who instilled in her the values of kindness and compassion that she carried throughout her life. Her legacy is carried on by her three devoted children, Ed Pitcher (Betty), Mark Pitcher (Barbara), and Ann Boblett, and two grandchildren, Isaiah and Eli Boblett, and her little dog Bear, who will forever cherish special memories of their time together.

Professionally, Leona made a career managing projects and learning new technologies in the media resource center of the Berrien County ISD, enriching the lives of countless students and educators with her dedication and technical savvy. Personally, she spent her earlier years as a den mother, dance mom, and a devoted supporter of each of her children’s passions. Once the children started their own adult lives, she continued to be an avid volunteer, contributing her time and energy to various causes that benefited her community during local elections, as a hospice worker, caring for sick friends, and bringing Bella, her registered therapy dog, to Berrien General Hospital where she also volunteered in the gift shop. Her generous spirit was felt by many, and her willingness to lend a hand was a testament to her caring nature.

Leona's interests were as colorful and diverse as her personality. One of her favorite pastimes was uncovering hidden treasures at rummage sales. She was quite a reader and a lover of horror movies who enjoyed camping and motorcycle rides. Her talents in crocheting and sewing continue to bring beauty to the lives of those around her. An enthusiastic card player, Leona's laughter and competitive spirit were fixtures at the local legion's euchre nights.

Described by those who knew her as loving, kind, and undeniably funny, Leona's presence was a source of happiness and comfort. Though small in stature, her heart and smile were huge and always lit up the room. Fiercely independent and strong beyond her size and years, she approached life with a can-do attitude that inspired others to persevere.

Leona's journey through life was one of service to others. Her warmth and generosity knew no bounds, and her impact on the world was as profound as it was loving. As we bid farewell to a woman of such remarkable character, we take solace in the fact that her legacy will continue to flourish in the hearts of those she touched.

We will remember Leona Pitcher not for the silence her passing leaves, but for the beautiful echoes of her laughter, the warmth of her hugs, and the countless lives she brightened. Her story is not one of an end, but a beautiful remembrance of a life well-lived and well-loved.
