Michael Dale Opulskas, a cherished pillar of his community, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2024, in Benton Harbor, MI, at the age of 67. Born on November 5, 1956, in Elkhart, IN, Michael's life journey was marked by his steadfast love for his family, his strong faith, and his unwavering commitment to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed.
Michael's early years were spent in Elkhart, where he grew up surrounded by a close-knit community that would shape his values and outlook on life. In 1979, he graduated from Andrews University with a bachelor's degree in construction engineering, a field in which he would excel and leave a lasting impact. His career as a contractor in carpentry was more than a profession; it was a means through which he expressed his creativity, precision, and ability to transform spaces and lives.
Married to his beloved wife on February 13, 2015, Nancy Tober, Michael was a devoted husband and a guiding light in their blended family. He was a proud father to Michael Opulskas II (Amanda) and Jaime Opulskas (Jeffrey Gunkel), a loving stepfather to Kacey Strong (Adam) and Erika Schreiber, and an adored grandfather to Gabriella Opulskas, Ava Erity, Adrian Allen, Tiffany Turner, and Emerson Gunkel. The family rejoiced in the anticipation of welcoming baby Strong, Michael's expected grandchild, into their loving fold. He is survived by two siblings; Chris Babiuch and Debbie Little (Bob).
Preceding Michael in death are his parents Stanley and Irene Opulskas as well as his sister Sandra Gorsuch.
Michael's contributions to his community were numerous and heartfelt. As a member of the Village Seventh-day Adventist Church, his faith was a cornerstone of his life. His dedication was evident in the 20 years he spent helping to run the church's Pathfinder program, which guides youth in their personal and spiritual development. Michael's leadership and mentorship in this program touched countless young lives, instilling in them the values of kindness, service, and integrity.
His passion for helping others extended beyond the church walls. For 17 years, Michael led an Alcoholics Anonymous group, supporting many individuals on their journey to recovery. His own experiences and triumphs provided hope and inspiration to those who sought his guidance, and his legacy within the group will be felt for years to come.
An avid fisherman, Michael found solace and joy in the tranquility of nature. Fishing for Walleye was not just a hobby but a cherished pastime that he enjoyed sharing with family and friends. The patience, skill, and excitement of the catch were experiences that Michael loved to pass on to the next generation.
Described by those who knew him as loving, kind, and generous, Michael's presence was a source of comfort and strength. His warm smile, hearty laughter, and the genuine care he showed for others made him a great father, husband, and grandfather. The impact of his deeds, the depth of his compassion, and the breadth of his love have left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
