Pauline was born March 4, 1925, in Lodi, Calif., to Reuben and Alice Weitz. She graduated with a degree in secretarial studies at Pacific Union College and, later, a music degree in Washington, D.C.
She married Dr. C. Mervyn Maxwell, professor of church history at Andrews University and author of God Cares and Tell It to the World. She was a daughter-in-law of Arthur S. Maxwell, author of Secret of the Cave, Uncle Arthur’s Bedtime Stories, Your Bible and You, and the Bible Story set.
She was a mother, grandmother, secretary, archive librarian, music teacher and pastor's wife. She taught private piano and organ lessons from home until her son entered college at Andrews University. She then worked as an archive librarian at the Ellen G. White Estate and the Center for Adventist Research in the James White Library at Andrews University.
As a pastor's wife, Pauline played the piano and organ in various churches, including Fairplain SDA Church in Benton Harbor. For 30 years she played organ for the Presbyterian Church in Cassopolis. She hosted booths in the Andrews University International Food Fair, making egg rolls. She raised a menagerie of animals including cotton-tail rabbits, robins, parakeets, canaries, toads, salamanders, snakes, dogs, chinchillas, minks, sea horses, iguanas, chameleons, as well as a praying mantis or two. Her favorite house plants were African violets. She helped her husband breed fruit flies and her granddaughter raise butterflies.
